Turning Tragedy into a Legacy of Hope
In December 2003, Sherry and Larry Swank experienced every parent’s worst nightmare: the loss of their son, Jaxson. Amidst the devastation, they made a vow to honor Jaxson’s life by becoming a better, stronger version of themselves.
A year later, that vow took shape. Larry, a pioneer in the multifamily housing industry, approached Sherry with a vision to transform their grief into a force for good. Together, they founded the Jaxson William Augustus Swank (JWAS) Foundation, a mission that has since changed their family and community forever.
Building a Foundation for Others
The JWAS Foundation was created to help children live life to the fullest. By providing comprehensive scholarships and leadership development from preschool through college, the Swanks ensure Jaxson’s spirit lives on through the success of every Jaxson Scholar.
On the organization’s recent 20-year anniversary, Sherry reflected on the many lives JWAS has uplifted since its founding. As a mother who recently lost her firstborn, she noted that JWAS provided hope and excitement that Jaxson would remain alive not only in her and Larry’s hearts, but also in the lives of the many children who become Jaxson Scholars. Sherry shared this message with JWAS supporters at the annual fundraiser in 2024.
